  Civil Services Exam - Geography

These four books cover almost 60% of the syllabus. Topics like Environmental Geography, Economic geography, contemporary issues, Human geography and Models - Theories are not covered by them. But their preparation can be done in the second stage so that by that time you are acquainted with broad out lines of the subject.

In the second stage, start your serious preparation for the above topics. Go through the book Ecology and Environmental Biology by S.S. purohit and supplement it with information on environmental issues appearing in the media. For example, Bali conference on climate change. In economic geography, you are advised to concentrate on Human development Index, issues of food-nutrition, famine. Here again the student must concentrate on relevant contemporary information. Log on to UN websites for information on world HDI patterns, world food production patterns etc. For models and theories the student can rely on any reputed notes / material. There is no point in going through reference text books for this purpose. It unnecessarily stretches you preparation with little returns. A study of India-economic survey and Hindu publications of Agriculture survey, Industrial survey and survey of Indian environment would provide you with lot of contemporary information for questions in paper II.
