Geography is a very popular optional for the civil service examination, of course, not without any reason. It is a subject of facts and figures, leaving no space for uncertainty. Hence dependability is the hall mark of the subject. Moreover, subject is almost like a semi-science, thus equally suitable to students of both humanities and sciences streams. Author strongly feels that the impression of Geography being a vast subject is only a misconception prevailing among the students. To be precise, no subject is easy or no subject is hard in the context of civil services exam. Geography syllabus appears to be vast, just because it is well defined to the minutest details. Infact, it is to the advantage of the student. This is the main reason, why questions in geography are always on expected lines. |
What is to be done?
Students who are fresh and strangers to the subjects should always start their preparation with NCERT X, XI and XII class geography text books. This would give a good foundation not only for optional but also takes care of Geography section of General studies. Next step is to go through the following books (must to read books) - Indian Geography -Khuller.
- Physical Geography -Savindrasingh
- Regional Development and Planning -Ray Chowdary
- Geographical Thought -Majid Hussain.
